Fantastic article, thank you. As a father of two girls, we've been besieged by "ridiculous toy syndrome" on more occasions than I can recall.

I'm hatching a plan to box up all the unused, discarded, and meaningless toys my girls have lying around gathering cobwebs, and give them to the local Goodwill store. The ones they do play with are the simplest anyway — it seems they have an innate wisdom that guides them just fine.

This is an issue that we'd grappled with when our son was born. My siblings, especially, did all they could to spite our attempts to keep natural, imagination inspiring toys in our home. I got on some great websites and built wishlists (e.g. www.atoygarden.com) then sent them out to the grandparents. I called each of my siblings and let them know that any plastic and/or battery operated toys would be donated and they could explain it to my son. Now, my son is almost 5 and though I'm the family "freak" at least they, more or less, honor my requests.

Wow, toys were an area that I hadn't even really put any thought into. I will definantly be more mindful of the things I give/buy my son! Thank you for this article!
