Question: I am concerned about the possible alcohol content of the kombucha I am drinking, as I have just become pregnant. I don’t know if the .5% could cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or other problems? I know you’ve said not to start drinking it while pregnant, because of detox, but I’ve been an avid kombucha drinker for about a year. I follow the directions from NT when I make it. Please advise about the alcohol and possible problems for the fetus. - Lisa
Answer: What is the alcohol content of kombucha? On the bottle it says less than 0.5 percent. That is the same as fruit juice. So I would not be concerned about it. By the way, cholesterol protects against fetal alcohol syndrome–so this is another good reason to consume high-cholesterol foods during pregnancy. - Sally
Question: Dentists advice against giving toddlers/babies milk in a bottle at night because the milk can cause cavities in the molars. They recommend that we either brush the teeth very well or keep the children awake for at least 2 hours to let the saliva do the washing before putting them to bed. My question is: Is this advice equally applicable if the child is drinking a bottle of raw milk (slightly warmed) just before going to bed? From what I read, Dr. Price used raw milk to treat cavities. - Archna
Answer: Well first of all, I don’t agree that brushing teeth can prevent cavities. But raw milk is an excellent way to build strong teeth (along with cod liver oil) and I don’t see any need to brush after a bottle of raw milk. - Sally
Question: Why is it non-advisable to eat sushi? I could not find an explanation in the ‘Nourishing Traditions’ that I could give my husband, a sushi-lover. - Archna
Answer: After I wrote NT, I found out that most sushi is made from fish that has been frozen for 14 days–apparently this is required in many stated. So if this is the case–just ask whether the fish has been frozen–then I think it is OK to eat sushi. - Sally
Question: I noticed that silicone baking sheets sellers are supporting this site. Are they safe? Which cooking pots and baking trays are best? - Kim
Answer: Big question. I wouldn’t use silicon. If you want to know more about the baking equipment I recommend see Nourishing Traditions. - Sally

While reading the question about feeding babies a bottle before bed it just made me upset that a dentist would tell a mother to keep her child awake for two hours after giving a bottle. It seems like just setting the child up for problems at bedtime from then on. Can you imagine being forced to stay awake for two hours when you need sleep. From a mother of five.

Nancy I agree
My dentist told me NOT to worry about feeding my daughter at night … first of all breastmilk do NOT give you cavities… but a high starch/ sugar diet does…..

I’ma bit unclear about the sushi - my kids love raw fish (sashimi) and we eat it often does this mean we should freeze it prior to eating as per raw liver?

Hi,
I’m wondering if anyone knows where I can get a glass bottle, and obviously a nipple to attach to it to occassionally feed my baby from? - it will only ever be expressed breast milk.
Thanks

I remember being told by my LaLeche counselor that I should never put breast milk in glass- that there is something in glass that causes the proteins in breast milk to cling to the sides of the bottle and the baby doesn’t end up consuming them.
