I must object to the traditional dental theory stated above that, "bacteria in their mouth eat this sugar and create acid". This is simply outdated and dentists just can't get beyond the "just brush and floss more to get rid of bacteria" theory. My 4 kids were all breastfed all night long well beyond their teeth erupted. Breastmilk was pooling in their mouths constantly and there were no cavities and still no cavities. And they never brushed their teeth at this age. I, on the other hand, who eat little sugar - none of it refined - and brush & floss like a maniac, am having dental erosion of my enamel at an alarming pace. This was not so during my college days when I subsisted on sugar and brushed briefly once a day to freshen my breath. My teeth were gleaming white and no cavities for many years on this diet. I am not unique in this situation as a casual survey of friends will reveal. So obviously something else is going on and other things need to be looked at - like saliva ph (mine is low for instance) and the underlying causes behind that. I just wish the dentists and hygienists would stop repeating their tired mantra and start doing some real investigating. That's what breaks my heart.

I am a dental hygienist and please please moms don't give you babies milk in bed. Milk has quite a bit of sugar. When a kiddo has milk in bed the bacteria in their mouth eat this sugar and create acid. This acid then quickly breaks down the thin enamel of baby teeth. If your child must have a bottle in bed, only put water in it. Giving them a bottle before bed would be fine as well, because the saliva will neutralize the pH of their mouth before bed. You just don't want them sucking on sugar(milk) all night. I see so many children who need all of their teeth extracted because they have been sucking a bottle all night their whole lives. Breaks my heart.

I remember being told by my LaLeche counselor that I should never put breast milk in glass- that there is something in glass that causes the proteins in breast milk to cling to the sides of the bottle and the baby doesn't end up consuming them.

Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can get a glass bottle, and obviously a nipple to attach to it to occassionally feed my baby from? - it will only ever be expressed breast milk.
Thanks

I'ma bit unclear about the sushi - my kids love raw fish (sashimi) and we eat it often does this mean we should freeze it prior to eating as per raw liver?

While reading the question about feeding babies a bottle before bed it just made me upset that a dentist would tell a mother to keep her child awake for two hours after giving a bottle. It seems like just setting the child up for problems at bedtime from then on. Can you imagine being forced to stay awake for two hours when you need sleep. From a mother of five.
