How to Overcome Candida (Pt3)

This is a reworking of a previous article by Bee Wilder. It has proven to be one of our most popular articles to date and we have chosen to feature it again in its extended version. Part 1 in February’s issue, describes what Candida is, how the illness is created, it’s plethora of symptoms and the havoc it creates in the body. Part 2 (March issue) includes step 1: eliminate food that feeds candida and setp 2: build the immune system. Following from there, we give you the rest of the protocol. 2. Take essential supplements

Candida sufferers need to build up their immune system, not only with a nutrient-rich diet, but also by supplementing with basic essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

Only Take Recommended Supplements
Most candida sufferers are much more successful if they only take the essential supplements listed below. If you are currently taking any other supplements it is best to gradually go off of them. Many supplements recommended by others, i.e. naturopaths, dieticians, and other healthcare professionals, are because they do not understand what a truly good diet is. This leads them to recommend supplements that are obtained from the nutrient-dense foods that are already included in Bee’s candida diet.

Why Other Supplements are Unnecessary
Most “extra” supplements are totally unnecessary, often causing adverse effects, or they are a complete waste of money. Kelp, seaweed and other green supplements are good examples of this. Not only are many green supplements too strong for sick people to handle, often overwhelming the body, but they also contain too much iodine. Iodine is only required in trace amounts in the body and you will get all that your body requires by eating butter and by taking the recommended amount of good ocean sea salt (1 1/2 teaspoons minimum per day). Too much iodine causes just as much problem for the thyroid as too little.

Amino acids in supplement form or in powders are another example. Such supplements are processed in pill or powdered form, often from soy, which has been hydrolyzed. Hydrolyzing is the chemical method of producing monosodium glutamate (MSG), and MSG is a neurotoxin, meaning that it is poisonous to nerve tissue or to the brain or spinal cord.

Such products may be advertised as “all natural,” but they are far from it, and they cause a lot of serious damage in the body. Amino acids contained in real foods like eggs and meats are much easier for the body to digest and utilize compared to any processed amino acids.

Macrominerals
There are only seven (7) macrominerals required by the body in amounts of 200 mg or more per day – all of the rest of the minerals are only required in “trace”amounts:
calcium
magnesium
chloride - contained in ocean sea salt
sodium - contained in ocean sea salt
phosphorus - found in all animal meats and eggs
potassium - found in many foods, i.e. eggs, meats and veggies, particularly green veggies, and also one cup of tea contains 120 mgs.
sulphur – found in eggs, meats, lemons, garlic and many other foods

Essential Supplements List – Calcium/Magnesium, Vitamin B Complex, and Vitamin E supplements must indicate on the label that they contain “no” yeast, soy, wheat, gluten, dairy, sugar, preservatives or additives.

Calcium/Magnesium Citrate, with “elemental amounts” (meaning the amount that is absorbed) indicated on the label, with an equal ratio of calcium to magnesium. Most supplements contain about 350 mgs of calcium per tablet. Take one or more a day depending upon how much is contained in the diet from other sources. Many calcium/magnesium supplements contain a ratio of 2:1 (calcium to magnesium), in which case a separate supplement of magnesium citrate is necessary to equal out the proportions.

Usually 1,000 to 1,200 mgs of calcium are recommended daily, with half that amount of magnesium, but that not correct. In fact taking such a high amount of calcium will cause imbalances in the body and be very damaging in the long run. Most of us are more deficient in magnesium than in calcium, so it is important to take at least an equal amount until you see how your body reacts.

Most candida sufferers will do very well on 600 mgs each of calcium and magnesium per day in divided doses. Muscle cramps indicate you need more magnesium, and possibly less calcium, and deep muscle pains indicate you’ve taken too much calcium. If you have more cramps and muscle pains on your left side it indicates that your calcium intake is either too high or too low, and if you have more cramps and muscle pains on your right side it indicates that your magnesium intake is either too high or too low. It is very difficult to balance calcium and magnesium, but each individual must find their own optimal levels by experimentation. Your body can only handle a maximum of 500 mgs of calcium at a time, so if you are taking more, it must be split into smaller doses.

Eggshells are a great source of calcium. Eggshell calcium contains healthy, balanced calcium because it also contains trace amounts of other minerals. Eggshell calcium is probably the best natural source of calcium, and it is easier for your body to digest and absorb than tablets or capsules. One-half (1/2) teaspoon of powdered eggshells equals 400 mgs of calcium. Please see “Eggshell Calcium, How to Make it and Take it” in our Group’s folder “Candida Supplements”. Calcium/Magnesium Dose: Maximum of 300 mgs of each taken twice a day.

Liquid Chlorophyll – Chlorophyll is a whole-food that contains a wide array of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. It helps build the immune system, detoxifies heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, etc.), and other pesticides in the body, improves the digestive system, improves energy levels and normalizes blood sugar and blood pressure levels.

Note that chlorella used to be recommended, but too many candida sufferers were intolerant of it, and it is difficult to find a good brand. Therefore, only liquid chlorophyll is recommended. If you are currently taking chlorella without any ill effects, you can continue taking it. One of the best liquid chlorophyll products is Chlorofresh by Nature’s Way, which is derived from alfalfa. It is available in 16 fluid ounce glass bottles. Liquid Chlorophyll Dose: Take 1 tablespoon of liquid chlorophyll 3 times a day in 4 ounces of filtered water.

Cod Liver Oil in the winter and Fish Oil in the summer
Cod liver oil provides omega-3, vitamin A and vitamin D. Get a good quality product that is unrefined, containing naturally occurring vitamin A and D. See the Cod Liver Oil Folder for more information, particularly the article “Cod Liver Oil Products with Nutrient Levels” which compares some brands, along with extra supplements required in order to obtain enough nutrients daily, i.e. vitamins A and D from halibut liver oil.

Many brands of cod liver oil are processed to remove all the vitamins A and D and then have synthetic vitamins A and D added back in. These products should be completely avoided since synthetic versions of A and D can be toxic. For those living in Canada or overseas, where recommended brands are not available, contact the manufacturer and enquire whether the A and D contain in their cod liver oil is naturally occurring or synthetic.

The best overall brand of cod liver oil is Blue Ice – you only need 1 teaspoon per day, plus 10,000 IUs of vitamin A from halibut liver oil or fish oil capsule (without vitamin D). Blue Ice Cod Liver Oil is available at:

Recommended Daily Nutrients for Candida:
Vitamin A: 20,000 to 30,000 IUs
Vitamin D: 800 to 1,200 IUs
Omega-3: 2,000 to 3,000 mgs

Fish Oil contains omega-3 only, and it is taken in the summer providing you can get enough exposure to the sun. In order to achieve optimal levels of vitamin D from the sun, 85% of body surface needs exposure to prime midday sun (10:00 AM to 2:00 PM). About 100-200 IUs of vitamin D are produced for each 5 percent of body surface exposed.

Light skinned people need 10-20 minutes of exposure, while dark skinned people need 90-120 minutes. It takes about 24 hours for UV-B-stimulated vitamin D to show up as maximum levels of vitamin D in the blood. Please note that natural body oils are critical to this absorption process. Because the body needs 30-60 minutes to absorb these vitamin D containing oils, it is best to delay showering, bathing, or swimming in a chlorinated pool for one hour after exposure.

The best fish oils are from “wild-caught cold-water fish,” i.e. anchovy, arctic cod, herring, krill, mackerel, salmon, and sardine. Fish Oil & Vitamin A Dose: Take 2,000 - 3,000 mgs of fish oil per day, along with 20,000 – 30,000 IUs of vitamin A from halibut liver oil or other fish oil capsules (without vitamin D).

Vitamin B Complex (balanced only), containing the following B Vitamins (Note: Some supplements do not contain all of the following B Vitamins):

  • 50 mg Vitamin B-1 (Thiamine)
  • 50 mg Vitamin B-2 (Riboflavin)
  • 50 mg Niacin (not niacinamide which is synthetic) – see Note.
  • 50 Vitamin B-6 (Pyridoxine)
  • 50 mcg Vitamin B-12
  • 50 mcg Biotin
  • 1 mg Folic Acid
  • 50 mg D-Pantothenic Acid
  • 50 mg Choline
  • 50 mg Inositol

Note: If you cannot buy a Vitamin B Complex that contains niacin, you can buy one that contains niacinamide, but you should also buy niacin separately and take it in addition to the Vitamin B Complex tablet. Niacin causes flushing, redness, and itchiness of the skin because it dilates blood vessels, even the tiniest capillaries, which releases radiation from the body. Radiation from the sun and other sources accumulate and build up in the body – remember all those terrible sunburns? Niacin also chelates out heavy metals from of the body. Vitamin B Complex Dose: Take 50 mgs twice a day plus 50 mgs of niacin, if it is separate.

Vitamin C containing rosehips, citrus bioflavonoids, hesperidin and rutin. Take 4,000 mgs in divided doses (1,000 mgs 4 times per day). The best combination of vitamin C to take is 1,000 mgs from a Vitamin C supplement containing rosehips, citrus bioflavonoids, hesperidin and rutin plus 3,000 mgs of sodium ascorbate.

Sodium ascorbate is a combination of powdered ascorbic acid crystals and baking soda. Most ascorbic acid contains 1,000 to 1,200 mgs of vitamin C for 1/4 teaspoon. Mix equal amounts of ascorbic acid and baking soda, and then add filtered water. If you get loose stools by taking 4,000 mgs per day you might need to start with less and gradually increase it – only increase the amount every 5 days. Vitamin C Dose: Take 4,000 mgs or more daily in divided doses.

Vitamin E (natural source only). Natural source vitamin E is indicated by the small “d” in front of the different types of vitamin E, such as d-alpha-tocopherol. The synthetic version begins with “dl”, i.e. dl-alpha-tocopherol. Most vitamin E supplements are derived from soy, which must not be taken. Clear Base or dry formulas are more likely to be soy-free. Vitamin E Dose: Take 200 IUs twice a day, or 400 IUs once a day (if you have been taking 800 IUs a day you can continue on that amount.)

Minerals – The best way to obtain minerals is:

  • By consuming a balanced diet as noted in the article
  • By taking calcium/magnesium supplements.
  • By drinking good filtered water that contains plenty of minerals, along with at least 1-1/2 teaspoons of ocean sea salt, which contains over 84 minerals, i.e. Celtic Sea Salt (Nature’s Cargo in Canada), Himalayan, etc.
  • Electrolyte Drink: 1/4 teaspoon of ocean sea salt and the juice of 1/2 of a freshly squeezed lemon added to 6 ounces of filtered water - drink 6 times a day (drink 3 of those glasses with meals to aid digestion).

Mineral Dose: Take a minimum of 1-1/2 teaspoons of ocean sea salt per day in addition to good filtered water that contains minerals.

Coconut Oil – Coconut oil is included as part of the diet, so it would not be started later on like other antifungals, but it is listed here in order to clarify the amount to take. Buy a good quality coconut oil that is expeller pressed, and not refined, bleached or deodorized. Coconut oil is part of the diet, so it is not started later on like other antifungals. See the Coconut Oil Folder in our Group’s files for brands and websites. Coconut Oil Dose: Start with one 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per day and gradually increase it every 4-5 days up to 5-6 tablespoons per day (taken in split doses). Note: 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon.

3. Eliminate yeast, mold and fungi

Elimination of yeast, mold and fungi in foods, drinks, and the environment is important for most Candida sufferers in the initial stages of the program, and it may be longer for sensitive individuals. Candida overgrowth can greatly increase the chances of an immune reaction to all types and forms of fungi. This results in an allergic response to yeast, mold and fungi, including mycotoxins. Many of our foods contain mycotoxins that are chemicals made by fungi.

Mycotoxins are found in grains and other processed foods that have been contaminated with fungi and mold, including processed meats. The most commonly contaminated crops are peanuts, corn, and wheat. Often, other foods such as barley, apples, sorghum and rye can also be contaminated. Antibiotics and alcohol are also mycotoxins, and they must not be consumed.

Yeasty, moldy, and other fungi-type foods and drinks that must be eliminated (foods that not allowed on the candida diet which are also in this category are not listed):

  • Canned or boxed foods of any kind.
  • Most leftover foods that easily collect mold.
  • Vinegar and vinegar containing foods like mayonnaise, pickles, mustard and relish – see Note*
  • Malt products or foods containing malt.
  • Edible fungi, including all types of mushrooms and truffles.
  • Processed and smoked meats: sausages, hot dogs, corned beef, pastrami, smoked fish, ham, and bacon.
  • Fruit juices (no fruits are allowed on the candida diet, except lemons and limes): all packaged fruits and fruit juices may potentially contain molds, including Real Lemon and other concentrated lemon or lime juices.
  • Dried foods: seaweed.
  • Pickled foods.
  • Some vitamins and minerals, including most B vitamins, “unless otherwise stated on the label that is does not contain yeast“.

*Note: Some candida sufferers may do okay consuming good apple cider vinegar that is unpasteurized and unfiltered like Bragg’s and Eden’s. But be cautious because most candida sufferers do not tolerate any kind of vinegar.

Environmental molds can also adversely affect Candida sufferers and the only way to minimize exposure is to remove as much as possible from your home. Molds are simple, microscopic organisms, like Candida Albicans, whose purpose in the ecosystem is to break down dead materials, and they are everywhere.

Molds reproduce by very tiny particles called spores. Spores are very light and can travel on air currents. They need moisture, food, and a surface to grow on and can be seen throughout the house, mostly in bathrooms. Mold growth can often be seen in the form of discoloration, and can appear in many colors, i.e. white, orange, pink, blue, green, black or brown.

Keep rooms dry, warm and light. Molds are living organisms that will only grow in cold, dark, damp places, so if you have a recurrent mold problem, bring more light, heat, or fans into the area to move the air.

For major mold problems, put a portable electric heater in the room, and turn it to the highest setting. Close the door and let it bake all day or overnight. The mold will dry up into a powder that brushes right off. For concentrated areas, use a hand-held dryer to dry the mold in just a few minutes. This is not the most energy-efficient method, but it will definitely solve the immediate problem. If you are sensitive to molds you should get someone else to handle such problems in your home, or wear gloves, protective clothing and a good face mask.

Let textiles dry before storing. Hang wet towels after bathing to let them dry before throwing them in the hamper. Hang clothes so there is space between them, and if you don’t launder clothing that is damp with perspiration, at least allow it to dry before putting it back in the closet.

It is important to determine why mold is growing. Investigate any areas that are moist, and repair the source of the moisture. There could be a roof or plumbing leak, or groundwater leaking into the basement. Air duct systems could be contaminated with mold. Clothes dryers generate humidity and should never be vented inside the house. Substances that are porous can trap molds and if contaminated should be thrown out, i.e. ceiling tiles, drywall, carpeting, paper, rags, and wood. They are nearly impossible to clean and will produce more spores when dry.

After making repairs, it is time to clean. For those who are extremely sensitive to molds it is advisable to call professionals in to rid their homes of molds. For those who can do their own cleaning, make your own mold and mildew remover. Mix borax and water in a spray bottle (amounts to mix are indicated on the borax box). Spray it on and the mold wipes right off. Borax inhibits mold growth, so wash down the walls in your bathroom with a borax solution and just leave it on, or sprinkle borax in damp cabinets under the sink. Do not use products that contain formaldehyde, phenol, kerosene, pentachlorophenol. Note “DANGER” warning on package label.

Wear gloves when handling moldy materials and also wear a particulate-removing respirator or facemask. Also wear protective clothing that is easily cleaned or may be discarded.

4. Improve Digestion

Most people with candida have digestive problems, including stomach aches and upsets, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, etc. While many candida programs recommend cleansing or cleanses of the bowels and other organs in the body, these treatments can be very harsh. Liver, kidney and gallbladder cleanses dump too many toxins into the body at one time, which most candida sufferers are too sick to handle. There have been cases of people with life threatening conditions caused by such cleanses, requiring emergency room treatment. Also, liver and gall bladder cleanses can release liver and galls stones into the bile ducts that can block and tear them, requiring emergency surgery.

All cleanses are a combination of herbs or ingredients which many candida sufferers cannot handle, not only because it causes too many toxins to be dumped into the system at one time, but also because the ingredients themselves are often too strong, causing adverse reactions.

However, this candida diet contains high “good” saturated fats, which are very important for liver and gall bladder health. Over time the diet will normalize functioning of all organs, including the liver, gall bladder and adrenals, and it may dissolve any stones that present.

The candida diet, supplements and other treatments recommended will do a good job of increasing digestion, strengthening the walls of the intestines (mostly with good saturated fats), increasing good motility of the intestines, clearing out the liver, adrenals and gall bladder, increasing kidney function, etc. and will affect any cleansing that the body sees necessary, and it will even chelating out heavy metals such as mercury, lead and aluminum, etc. Therefore such treatments are not recommended at any point during the candida program, including liver, kidney, gall bladder or bowel cleanses, except for enemas – see the Enema Folder in our Files.

Fasting is also not recommended. Even though fasting is intended to give the body a rest and/or to allow it to clear out toxins and wastes, while your body is fasting it is also not getting the nutrients it needs for healing and energy. It is more important to give the body what it needs to build up the immune system and to affect healing, allowing it to cleanse itself as it sees fit.

Between meals it is important that your body fast so it can assimilate and utilize the nutrients without having to direct its energies towards digesting more food. That is why snacking is not recommended.

Some people do a type of fasting where they only consume the raw egg drink for a few days at a time. That is not considered “true fasting” and it wouldn’t cause problems because you would be getting plenty of nutrients and energy.

To improve digestion the following initial steps are recommended:

  1. Avoid raw vegetables until digestion has improved, except for lacto-fermented vegetables, which are actually pre-digested.
  2. Do not overcook meats, and undercook egg yolks, leaving them runny.
  3. Use spices liberally when cooking, and add ocean sea salt to foods after they are cooked.
  4. Drink about 3-4 ounces of the electrolyte drink (lemon juice and ocean sea salt in water) just before you begin to eat a meal, and sip the remainder of the 6 ounces throughout the meal.
  5. Chew foods thoroughly to stimulate digestive enzymes in the mouth, to break up foods into the smallest particles as possible for better digestion.
  6. Eat enough foods at each meal that contains a good balance of proteins, good fats and vegetables.
  7. Eat at least 2 complete meals per day, but not more than 3 meals.
  8. Avoid snacking in between meals.
  9. Eat at least 1 tablespoon of unheated sauerkraut or kimchi with each meal.
  10. Take digestive enzymes as needed.

If the chyme (mixture of food, water and enzymes) coming out the stomach does not contain enough stomach acid, digestive enzymes and liquid it will not sufficiently trigger digestive enzymes in the duodenum, which is the first part of the small intestines. Some foods stimulate stomach acid production, but sometimes it is necessary to also take digestive enzymes.

Foods that aid digestion:

  • Protein
  • Good fats such as coconut oil, butter, lard, naturally occurring animal fats, etc.
  • Ocean sea salt
  • Lemon juice
  • Gelatin-rich bone broths
  • Lacto-fermented foods and drinks, i.e. cabbage rejuvelac, sauerkraut, kimchi, etc.
  • Spices, teas and herbs, i.e. camomile, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc.

Test Stomach Acid Levels - To see whether you have enough stomach acid do this test: Mix 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in 8 ounces of cold water, and drink it first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Keep track of how much time it takes you to burp or belch. Time up to five minutes. If you have not belched within five minutes stop timing.

If your stomach is producing adequate amounts of hydrochloric acid you should belch within two to three minutes. Early and repeated belching is consistent with excessive stomach acid. This is because belching is caused by stomach acid and baking soda reacting to form carbon dioxide gas. If you do not burp or belch with 2 – 3 minutes it is advisable to take digestive enzymes.

Digestive Enzymes - The most beneficial digestive enzyme to take is Betaine Hydrochloric Acid with Pepsin, except for individuals with peptic ulcers. Capsules are taken in increasing doses with meals until symptoms of excess acid are evident, at which time you would cut back on how many tablets taken. If you get symptoms of too much stomach acid, which is mostly a burning feeling, sip on this drink until symptoms subside: 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 4 ounces of warm water.

This is what a typical digestive enzyme program would be:
Meal 1: Take 1 capsule (500-700 mg) at the beginning of your meal.
Meal 2: Take 2 capsules at the beginning of your meal.
Meal 3: Take 3 capsules at the beginning of your meal.
Meal 4: Take 4 capsules; two at the beginning of your meal and two in the middle of your meal, and so on, up to 8 capsules per meal.

NOTE: When taking several capsules they will help you more if you take them throughout the meal (beginning, middle and end). For individuals that are daring and want more rapid results, you could increase the dose by two capsules each meal instead of one.

If, irritation occurs (heartburn, stomach ache, heaviness, nausea), you can take baking soda in water to neutralize the excess acidity (1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 4 ounces of warm water), but sip it only long enough to alleviate the symptoms. At your next meal you would take 1-2 capsules less than the number that caused symptoms. Sometimes small meals do not require as many capsules as required for a larger meal. Remember that symptoms of high stomach acid are exactly the same as low stomach acid, i.e. heartburn, stomach ache, heaviness and nausea.

Is your gallbladder ready for fat? If you live in North America, chances are you’ve experienced problems with your gall bladder at one time or another. Typical gallbladder symptoms include: gas (especially burping after meals), a full or heavy feeling after meals, bloating, “acid reflux” (after meals and at night when lying down), pain in the right side radiating into the right shoulder blade, and loose or light colored stools that float.

Two things the gallbladder doesn’t like are bad fats and no fats. Bad fats, like man-made processed vegetable oils, are difficult to digest and put a lot of stress on the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a little sac that sits alongside your liver. The liver produces bile, a substance made from cholesterol that emulsifies fat and makes it easier to digest. The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile, and then secretes it into the small intestines when fats and proteins are present. If you do not eat fat, the gallbladder won’t get any exercise and can begin to atrophy.

If you’ve eaten mostly man-made fats in your life or have spent many years on a low-fat diet, chances are your gallbladder will need a little work before you will be able to completely digest generous amounts of good fats in your diet. Start by eating the recommended amount of proteins, fats and carbs and by practicing good digestive (above).

Other helpful remedies include Swedish Bitters, 1 teaspoon in water taken just after meals, and a minimum of 1 tablespoon of lacto-fermented sauerkraut or kimchi with each meal. Ox bile is also helpful (take as directed on the label).

All nature-made saturated fats, i.e. coconut oil, butter, lard, etc. are very easy on the gall bladder because they do not require bile salts in order to be digested. If you are just beginning to add fats to your diet after many years of low-fat foods, your best choice is to start with coconut oil or butter. For more information see our Group’s Digestion Folder.

Step 3 Kill off Candida overgrowth

Antifungals (coconut oil and Pau D’arco tea are considered part of the diet) can be started when your “die-off” symptoms have diminished after being on the diet. Some people need to stay on the diet 3-6 months before they can tolerate antifungals. You will know whether you are ready for a strong antifungal when you try it. If your “die-off” symptoms are intolerable you should stop taking the antifungal and stay on the diet longer.

Antifungals that kill off Candida overgrowth:

  • Clove Oil.
  • Coconut oil
  • Garlic.
  • Oil of Oregano.
  • Pau D’arco tea (mild antifungal)
  • Nystatin, an antifungal medication.

A word of caution! Oil of Oregano and Pau D’arco are not recommended during pregnancy nor while breastfeeding. All of the above antifungals, except Pau D’arco tea, are considered strong.

Foods that kill or inhibit the growth of candida:

There are also many foods that inhibit the growth of, or kill, candida, i.e. all of the cabbage and onion families - arugula, bok choy, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, collards, horseradish, hot peppers, kale, kohlrabi, mustard greens, radishes, rutabaga, shallots, Swiss chard, turnips, turnip greens, watercress, etc.

Note: You only need to take one strong antifungal at a time (garlic or oil of oregano or clove), in addition to coconut oil and Pau D’arco, and only take the amounts recommended. “More is not better!” Taking more than one strong antifungal, or taking too high of a dose, is not only a waste but it can also overwhelm and confuse the body. The body needs to be allowed to utilize treatments in its own way and time. Pushing the body too hard is not recommended.

Resistance does not develop against naturally-occurring antifungals such as coconut oil, garlic, oil of oregano, clove oil, and Pau D’arco. Even nystatin has not caused resistance to occur. Bee took nystatin powder for 2-1/2 years and still cured her candida. The reason drugs cause resistance is because viruses and bacteria, which are created in the body, change into different forms in an effort to find one that will get rid of toxic drugs. Viruses and bacteria are created to clean up the body.

Drugs, other than Nystatin, i.e. Diflucan (Fluconazole), Nizoral, Itraconazole, Ketoconazole, Miconazole, etc., are not recommended. They are all very hard on the liver, and can often cause irreparable damage. Natural substances are much more effective, without the dangerous side effects of these drugs, except for Nystatin. This is because Nystatin is not absorbed past the intestines to any significant degree. Natural antifungals are at least equally effective, if not better, than Nystatin.

There are many other antifungals available on the market today, but the antifungals recommended have been researched the most and they have the most information and reported success. If you are currently taking another type of antifungal you can finish taking it, and then you can switch.

Clove Oil
The clove is an evergreen tree, called Eugenia arena, reaching a height of 15 to 30 feet tall. It is native to the Spice Islands and the Philippines but also grown in India, Sumatra, Jamaica, the West Indies, Brazil, and other tropical areas. The bark is pale yellowish grey in color and smooth. It has opposite ovate (egg-shaped) leaves 3-6 inches long. Its flowers, are red and white, bell-shaped, and grow in clusters. The flowers when gathered are at first of a reddish color, but on drying they assume a deep brown cast. The familiar clove used in the kitchen is the dried flower bud. Clove oil is prepared by steam distillation.

Traditional uses in America include treating worms, viruses, candida, and various bacterial and protozoan infections. Clove is also used for toothaches, bad breath, dizziness, cough, earache, colitis, epilepsy, palsy, and digestive upsets, as a sleep-inducer, anti-inflammatory, blood-thinner, mental stimulant, etc.

Clove oil kills intestinal parasites and exhibits broad antimicrobial properties against fungi (candida) and bacteria, supporting its traditional use as a treatment for diarrhea, intestinal worms, and other digestive ailments. Clove may help relax the smooth muscle lining of the digestive tract. A few drops of the clove oil in water will stop vomiting, and clove tea will relieve diarrhea, gas, bloating, intestinal spasms and nausea.

Athletics foot, nail fungus, & skin problems: Clove oil is just as effective as oil of oregano in treating these conditions. It can be applied directly to the skin or nails several times a day. If the skin is sensitive or broken clove oil can be diluted with extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil.

One drop of clove oil applied to the roof of the mouth can instantly relieve many headaches. Long used in aromatherapy to relieve pain, it is also uplifting oil with a delightful scent. For general pain relief, add 3 drops of clove oil to 1 teaspoon of coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil. It can also be used topically to relieve general aches and pains.

Clove Dosage:

  • Clove Tea: Use 1 teaspoon of ground cloves, or ground up whole cloves (a coffee grinder works best) per cup of boiling water. Boil the water first, and then set it off of the heat. Add 1 teaspoon of ground cloves Steep 10 to 20 minutes. Drink 4 cups a day. Only organic or certified organic herbs and spices should be used since all commercial sources are irradiated (zapped with radiation).
  • Clove Oil: 1 drop of 100% clove oil 3 times per day, increased gradually up to 3 drops 3 times per day. NOW brand is excellent. Ask your health food store to order it if they do not have it in stock.

Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil is taken as part of the diet, but it is listed here to emphasize it’s effectiveness as an antifungal, and to list it’s other health benefits. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, a proven antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal agent. Here are some other very interesting facts about Coconut Oil:

  1. It reduces our need for Vitamin E.
  2. It is an antioxidant and fights “free-radicals” (toxins).
  3. It can be used on the skin to restore and repair it, and to moisturize it.
  4. It can be used as a hair conditioner. It softens the hair, conditions the scalp and controls dandruff or cradle cap (caused by candida).
  5. Antiseptic fatty acids in coconut oil help to prevent fungal and bacterial infections in the skin when it is consumed, and to some extent when applied to the skin.
  6. The biggest chemical barrier to infectious organisms is the acid layer on the skin. This is why sweat and the oil produced on our skin are good for us. Taking fewer showers and baths is advisable because it allows the skin to build up natural oil, which is a good acidic protective barrier, and also helps the skin make vitamin D when exposed to the sun. Soap washes off the protective layer of oil and acid on our skin. After a shower or bath apply coconut oil to the entire body to quickly re-establish the skin’s natural antimicrobial and acid barrier.
  7. It helps reduce chronic skin inflammation, i.e. rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, etc. It soothes and heals.

Buy a good quality coconut oil that is expeller pressed, and not refined, bleached or deodorized. See the Coconut Oil Folder for coconut oil brands and websites. Coconut Oil Dose: Start with one teaspoonful and gradually increase it every 5-7 days up to 5-6 tablespoons per day (taken in divided doses during the day). Coconut is part of the diet, so it is not started later on like other antifungals.

Garlic
Garlic contains a large number of sulphur containing compounds that exhibit very potent broad-spectrum antifungal properties. Among the most studied are allicin, alliin, alliinase and S-allylcysteine. Some studies have found garlic to be just as potent as nystatin (drug) at killing Candida overgrowth. It also enhances the immune system.

In one study it was found that candida is sensitive to garlic; resistance to the broad spectrum of active principles present is unlikely so that its anti-candida effects may provide an important alternative route to drugs. Some of the most traditional uses of garlic have been for colds, flu and other infections, such as earaches, vaginal yeast infections, and high blood pressure. Modern research has focused on four main areas: heart disease, cancer, infectious disease, and antioxidant effects. Garlic is a natural antibiotic, but unlike manufactured antibiotics that kill all bacteria, garlic only destroys the unfriendly bacteria, and at the same time assists the development of the friendly bacteria present in the digestive system. It contains the volatile oil, allium, which converts to allicin when crushed.

Fresh garlic is significantly more potent against Candida Albicans than any other form, including tablets, oils and pills. Fresh garlic is also a suitable alternative to drugs for serious systemic yeast infections in patients with severe immune suppression. Adding fresh garlic to food (raw and crushed), or crushing and swallowing raw cloves is a cheap and powerful antifungal treatment.

Garlic also stimulates the immune system, improves circulation, lowers high blood pressure, kills intestinal parasites, and is a powerful antioxidant and antibiotic, in addition to many other health benefits.

To obtain the most benefit from garlic buy “certified organic” garlic and crush it with the flat of a broad knife, or put it through a garlic press. Crushing breaks the cell walls releasing and mixing garlic’s beneficial properties. Exposed to air, allicin converts to diallydisulphide, which is a powerful bactericide and fungicide (also effective against many viruses). In addition, garlic contains vitamins A, B and C.

Raw Garlic Dose: To kill off Candida overgrowth start with 1 average sized raw clove per day in order to minimize “die-off” symptoms, and gradually increase it to 4 or 5 cloves per day, mixed in foods or taken with meals. Garlic can also be taken as tea, and garlic tea can be used in douches or enemas.

Garlic Tea (drink 4 cups per day, starting with 1 cup and gradually increasing it)

  • Boil 4 cups of water and remove it from the heat (make 1 cup by dividing the recipe).
  • Add 4 to 5 medium to large crushed cloves of garlic and the juice of one lemon (freshly squeezed).
  • Let it steep 20 minutes and strain. It can be drunk hot or cold. If the taste is unpalatable it may be mixed with a vegetable juice like tomato. It can be re-heated, but do not bring it to a boil.
  • Drink a minimum of 4 cups a day, but again start with less and gradually increase the amount.

To minimize “garlic breath” chew on fresh parsley, fennel seeds or whole cloves. If you do not want to take raw garlic, the best alternative is Kyolic brand garlic capsules. Start with 1 capsule taken in the middle of meals, three times daily, and gradually increase it to 3 capsules 3 times a day.

Oil of Oregano
Caution! Oil of Oregano is not recommended during pregnancy nor while breastfeeding.

Oil of oregano is a very versatile herb that provides many other benefits other than as an antifungal. As an antifungal it is extremely effective, just like raw crushed garlic or clove oil. The key element in oregano is the oil, which Foster points out in his book “In Herbal Renaissance” “contains carvacrol and thymol as the primary components.” Foster attributes the “fungicidal and worm-expellant properties” of oil of oregano to carvacrol and thymol. “These two phenols may constitute as much as 90% (of the oil).” Cass Ingram, D.O., writes in his book “The Cure is in the Cupboard” “these two phenols work “synergistically” and that is the reason “oil of oregano” packs a double punch in antiseptic powder and explains why it is infinitely more potent than commercial phenol in microbial killing power.”

All of this helps make oil of oregano a significant factor in treating internal and external fungi, including dandruff, cradle cap, nail fungus and athlete’s foot. Skin conditions such as rosacea, psoriasis and eczema can be improved with the treatment as well. Ingram explains the astonishing discovery that “oil of oregano outright destroys all variety of fungi and yeasts, regardless of where they reside.”

Oregano oil is also a significant immune-booster. The benefits of oregano have gone largely unnoticed and under-publicized for far too long. As Ingram notes, oregano is “one of the world’s finest natural medicines, if it’s true oregano.”

Oil of oregano is a completely natural substance derived from wild oregano species. The plant grows in remote mountainous regions free of pollution. Only the leaves of the flowering plant are used. They are picked precisely when the plant is highest in essential oil. Being wild, it is grown chemical-free and the oil is extracted via a completely natural process - no chemicals or solvents are used. The oil is the source of virtually all of the plant’s active ingredients.

Oil of Oregano is a potent antiseptic used both topically and internally. Research demonstrates that it is effective in killing a range of organisms, especially yeast and bacteria. Oil of oregano at relatively low doses was found to be effective against Staphylococcus bacteria and was comparable in its germ-killing properties to antibiotic drugs such as streptomycin, penicillin and vancomycin. Researchers at the Department of Food Science at the University of Tennessee reported that, among various plant oils, oil of oregano exhibited the greatest antibacterial action against common pathogenic germs such as Staph, E. coli and Listeria. [Journal Food Protection, Volume 64, July 2001] British researchers reported oregano oil had antibacterial activity against 25 different bacteria. [Journal Applied Microbiology, Volume 88, February 2000]

The growing problem of antibiotic resistance has health authorities extremely concerned. It is already the case that various germs are showing resistance to vancomycin (strong antibiotic), particularly to intestinal bacteria (Enterococcal species) among hospitalized patients. Oil of oregano is not to be confused with common oregano in the kitchen spice cupboard, which is usually Oregano marjoram rather than true oregano (Oregano vulgare).

Oil of Oregano Dose: Oregano oil is strong if placed directly in the mouth, but you can dilute it with coconut or extra virgin olive oil - put 1 or more drops in 1 teaspoon of oil. You can also put oregano oil in gelatin capsules (buy No. “0” gelatin capsules at the drug store). Start with 1 drop three times a day, and increase it slowly to 3 drops 3 times daily. It can be taken on an empty stomach or with foods.

Oregano oil, even those containing 75% carvacrol, does not irritate the skin if there is no rash and the skin is not broken. In that case mix drops into 1 teaspoon or more of coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil before applying it. Full strength it can be used to treat nail fungus.

Pau D’arco
Caution! Pau D’arco is not recommended during pregnancy nor while breastfeeding.

Pau D’arco is the bark of a rainforest tree which is inherently anti-fungal (also known as Taheebo or Lepacho). It is a much milder form of antifungal than garlic, oil of oregano, clove oil or coconut oil therefore it can be started at the beginning, along with the Candida diet. Because it is powerful antioxidant it helps alleviate die-off symptoms. It can be consumed along with other antifungals.

Pau D’arco Dose: Pau D’arco is best taken as a tea. Pau D’arco tea bags are available; follow the directions on the package. The best quality Pau D’arco is the pure loose bark, but it very difficult to find. When using loose bark follow this recipe:

How to make Pau D’arco Tea using loose bark:

  • Put 1 heaping tablespoon of tea in a sauce pan and add 1 quart of water.
  • Simmer on the lowest heat possible for at least half an hour.
  • Allow the liquid to cool. Strain and pour into a glass jar with a tight sealing lid.
  • Keep it in the fridge and sip the cooled tea. It may be reheated if you prefer to drink it warm but do not boil it. It keeps for two days.
  • Drink 4 cups or more per day.

Nystatin
Nystatin is a broad spectrum fungicidal (kills fungus) drug available only by prescription in some countries. It is fast-acting and well tolerated, killing candida on contact. It is not absorbed past the intestines to any significant degree, therefore it a very safe drug, compared to the others which cause severe liver problems. Nystatin is virtually free of side effects or drug interactions, and does not cause resistance.

Nystatin can only be obtained by prescription in most countries. It is available as a cream or powder for topical use, suspension (liquid), and tablets, but powder is the purest form and it can be used both externally and internally. However, there is a powdered form of nystatin that is not intended for internal use so please ensure the pharmacist knows what he is dispensing. There is a powder for external use only which also contains talcum powder.
The suspension form is usually prescribed in amounts of 2 ml 2-4 times per day for infants and children. The tablets are prescribed in the amount of 2-3 tablets 2-4 times per day for older children and adults. Be sure it does not contain sugar!

Powdered Nystatin is preferable since it is more easily tolerated than the tablet form and as it is swallowed it kills Candida in the mouth, throat and esophagus. However, some people cannot tolerate the bad taste and have to resort to taking the tablets. Be sure to buy tablets that do not contain sugar!

Nystatin Dose: Nystatin powder is taken orally four times a day. Start with 1/8th teaspoon of dry powder added to 4 ounces of water. Stir well. This mixture must be used immediately after mixing. Do not mix and store it for later use. Take one mouthful and swish it around in your mouth for as long as possible, gargle, and swallow. Be sure to use all the liquid to get the full dose of medicine.

Gradually increase the amount of Nystatin over a month’s period of time or more, up to a maximum of one teaspoon four times a day. Nystatin may have to be taken for months and sometimes years, along with the diet. Even if symptoms disappear completely continue taking Nystatin until the full prescribed amount is finished. Stopping it too early may allow the Candida to get the upper hand again.

Keep Nystatin powder refrigerated, free of moisture, and away from heat and light. Nystatin may be stored for 90 days after opening, but any unused portion should be discarded after that time.

Nystatin powder can kill Candida in many different ways:

  • Sniffing or inhaling Nystatin for nasal passages and sinuses. Many Candida sufferers can clear nasal congestion, postnasal drip and mental and nervous symptoms by inhaling or sniffing Nystatin. Here’s how to do it: Shake your bottle of Nystatin powder vigorously. Remove the cap and hold the bottle just under your nose. Sniff or inhale very cautiously. Another method is to hold one nostril and put a dot of Nystatin powder on your index finger and sniff gently. Repeat for the other nostril. The number of sniffs or inhales can be gradually increased to 3 or 4 in a row up to three times a day or more, depending upon how well it is tolerated.
  • Mouth (thrush) - mix 1/4 teaspoon of Nystatin powder in 1-2 ounces of water. Hold it in the mouth up to 2 minutes, swishing it around and then swallow.
  • Athlete’s foot, nail fungus, diaper rash, dry skin spots or rashes - For athlete’s foot the powder can be dusted on the feet, and inside shoes and socks. For diaper rash the powder can also be dusted, carefully, onto the affected areas. To make a cream that can be rubbed into affected areas mix one teaspoon of Nystatin powder into two teaspoons of a very mild cold cream or a coconut based cream. Apply two times a day or more.
  • Rectal and vaginal suppository - fill gelatin capsules (available at health food stores) with Nystatin powder. Push one capsule high up into the rectum at bedtime. For vaginal yeast infection use one or two capsules at bedtime.
  • Vaginal douche - mix one teaspoon in one quart of water and douche once or twice a week, and alternate with a powdered acidophilus douche (one teaspoon to one quart of water) the same number of times a week.
  • Enema - The benefits of a Nystatin enema cannot be overemphasized. Many people have experienced tremendous relief of their symptoms and renewed energy levels after having an enema. The main purpose a Nystatin enema is to kill Candida in the lower bowel because it is not easily reached by antifungal agents.

Nystatin enemas should be alternated with probiotic enemas, and enemas should never be done more than once every 4-5 days to allow the bowel to return to normal. The large bowel is responsible for balancing water and electrolytes in the body, and it makes some B vitamins and vitamin K, along with other important functions. For instructions on how to administer an enema see the Section “Antifungal, Probiotic and Coffee Enemas” later on in this article.

Step 4 Plant good bacteria in the digestive tract

When your “die-off” symptoms have started to subside after taking antifungals for awhile, you can start taking probiotics. At this point you are doing all 4 Steps at one time, i.e. Diet (Steps 1 & 2), Step 3 Antifungals, and Step 4 Probiotics. You continue doing all 4 Steps until you have completely cured your candida.

Probiotics are the ‘friendly’ or ‘beneficial’ bacteria/micro-organisms that normally live in the digestive tract. As yeast colonies are reduced, space becomes available for colonizing these healthy bacteria. Lactobacteria make up 95% of the beneficial bacteria found in the small intestines, so it is most important to colonize it, rather than other friendly bacteria.

When you start on probiotics you will find these friendly bacteria can cause gas and bloating. This is a die-off response to the friendly bacteria. Friendly bacteria literally eat candida, which in turn release gases (carbon dioxide).

This is why probiotics are added to the program after antifungals. This allows enough time for the diet and antifungals to reduce intestinal yeast so that gas and bloating will not be so extreme. Anyone who experiences tremendous gas and bloating after starting on probiotics has excessive intestinal candida, and they should continue taking antifungals awhile longer before adding probiotics.

Cabbage Rejuvelac – the best probiotic!
The easiest and least expensive way to plant healthy bacteria in the digestive tract is to take cabbage rejuvelac. Cabbage is a vegetable that is teeming with several healthy strains of lactobacteria, including lactobacillus.

Cabbage Rejuvelac Recipe
No starter is needed for making this recipe.
Ingredients: 3 cups of cabbage and 1-3/4 cups of water

1. Use distilled water or prepare tap water; tap water contains chlorine which will interfere with the production of bacteria. Boil tap water for 30 minutes, uncovered, to remove chlorine, or leave out uncovered jars containing tap water for 24 hours so the chlorine will dissipate out of the water.
2. Start by blending together 1-3/4 cups of distilled or purified water plus 3 cups of coarsely chopped, loosely packed fresh cabbage.
3. Start the blender at a low speed and then advance the blender to high speed for 15 seconds or less. Do blend it too much. If the cabbage is too fine it will create a strong tasting rejuvelac.
4. Pour the mixture into a wide-mouthed jar which allows 1 inch of space above the mixture.
5. Cover it tightly, and let stand it at room temperature for 3 days.
6. After 3 days strain off the liquid rejuvelac, saving 1/4 cup for the next batch. The first batch of cabbage rejuvelac takes 3 days to mature, but succeeding batches only take one day (24 hours).

Each morning:
a. Strain off the fresh rejuvelac liquid, but set aside 1/4 cup for the next batch. You will be drinking the rejuvelac liquid. You can discard the cabbage or use it to make kimchi – see the Recipe Folder.
b. Blend together 1-1/2 cups (Note: this is 1/4 cup less than the first batch) of distilled or purified water plus 3 cups of coarsely ground, loosely packed fresh cabbage, and blend as in #2 above.
c. Pour the mixture into a wide-mouthed jar which allows 1 inch of space above the mixture, and add 1/4 cup of the fresh rejuvelac just strained off.
d. Cover it tightly, shake well to mix the fresh rejuvelac into the mixture, and let it stand at room temperature until the next morning and repeat from Step a.
Cabbage rejuvelac can also be made without using a blender. Finely chop 2-1/2 cups of cabbage, instead of 1-3/4 cups, but use the same amount of water.

Good quality rejuvelac tastes similar to a cross between carbonated water and the whey obtained when making yogurt. Bad quality rejuvelac has a much more putrid odor and taste and should not be consumed.

Refrigerate rejuvelac if it is to be kept overnight. Discard any rejuvelac on hand 24 hours after it is poured off the cabbage.

Taking Rejuvelac - Drink each day’s rejuvelac liquid during the course of the day by taking 1/2 cup three times per day, preferably with meals.

Probiotic supplements are also good for planting good bacteria in the digestive tract. Since 95% of beneficial organisms in the digestive tract are lactobacteria, the simplest form of lactobacillus is recommended. Freeze-dried acidophilus lactobacillus is the most common form available:

  • Buy acidophilus-lactobacillus that is not based on dairy.
  • It should be free of: soy, wheat, dairy, sugar, yeast, gluten, and artificial coloring or preservatives.
  • It should be in dark bottles or opaque containers to avoid deterioration by heat and light, and kept refrigerated, even at the store.
  • It is best to get powdered probiotics so you can measure out the correct amount of units. If you buy capsules you may need to dump them out in order to get the right dose.*

*Note: Dose is a maximum of 10 billion units per day, taken in divided doses.
There are numerous probiotic and prebiotic products available, with many companies making wild claims about their products in an effort to increase sales. These companies are using “marketing” ploys in order to distinguish their products from others on the market, for example:

Enteric Coated - A number of companies are selling “enteric coated” capsules and claim that they survive high acids in the stomach. First of all, the stomach also has mucus membranes, which can have candida overgrowth, and it also contains lactobacteria. Therefore the stomach also needs probiotics. Secondly, since lactobacillus is a normal inhabitant of the stomach, how can stomach acids possibly kill it? When I was curing my candida 20 years ago I took powdered probiotics.

Quick Fix - Take this product and you do not have to follow a candida diet! The company that makes ThreeLac makes just such a wild claim. Many candida sufferers can attest to the fact that this totally untrue. Here are four very good reasons not to take ThreeLac: They claim you can take ThreeLac without doing the diet, which is totally false and misleading. This promises a “quick fix” just like the medicos and drug companies do, which has been the major cause of candida in the first place. It also gives people totally false hopes. For that reason alone it is not recommend it, but there are other reasons. It is expensive, probably because it is very highly marketed. It is processed and contains several ingredients, making it a complex product, so a person would not know what they are reacting to if they experience adverse affects from it. One of ThreeLac’s questionable ingredients is refined yeast powder.

Primal Defense and Fungal Defense produced by The Garden of Life. They are not only extremely expensive, when there are so many other viable and less expensive products available, but they are also complex products, containing many ingredients that may cause adverse reactions in some people.
FOS and Inulin are sugars that are added to probiotics in order to distinguish products for marketing purposes. Manufacturers claim that Inulin and FOS specifically feed only good bacteria. The reality of the situation is much different. If you examine the scientific literature about Inulin and FOS you will find that is not true. The best example is concerning Klebsiella bacterium. Recent studies have shown that Inulin and FOS encourages the growth of Klebsiella, a bacterium that increases intestinal permeability. It is also questionable that Inulin and FOS promote the growth of lactobacillus bacteria, but at the same time it would also promote the growth of candida and other potentially harmful bacteria. When I was curing my candida 20 years ago, probiotics were measured in millions, not billions. But now it seems there are very few products measured in millions.
Probiotic Dosages – Start with 1 billion units 3 times a day (or less), with or without food, and gradually increase it to a total of 10 billion units per day in split doses. It will not hurt you to take more, but taking excessive amounts is a waste of money and it will not speed up the process of implantation.

Yogurt & Kefir would ordinarily be a good sources of probiotics, however many candida sufferers cannot tolerant them, for a number of reasons. It has been found that candida sufferers are also intolerant of homemade yogurt and kefir, where most of the lactose (sugar) content is removed by longer fermentation times. Please note that the higher the butterfat content in dairy the lower the lactose content (butter contains the least amount of lactose).

The problem for candida sufferers is caused by more than just lactose content. It is because candida sufferers have inadequate digestion, making it is difficult for them to break down nutrients in all foods, but dairy products, other than butter, are particularly difficult to digest. This is mainly caused by pasteurization and homogenization which damages dairy products. It is more evident in dairy products, other than butter, even in homemade kefir and yogurt.

Pasteurization destroys all valuable enzymes, including lactase for the assimilation of lactose; galactase for the assimilation of galactose; phosphatase for the assimilation of calcium. Literally dozens of other precious enzymes are destroyed in the pasteurization process. Without them, dairy is very difficult to digest, which puts undue stress on the human pancreas. However the pancreas is not always able to produce these enzymes; over-stress of the pancreas can lead to diabetes and other diseases, in addition to interfering with the digestion of other foods. Sally Fallon of the Weston A. Price Foundation states that: “Pasteurization destroys enzymes, diminishes vitamin content, denatures fragile milk proteins, destroys vitamin B12 and vitamin B6, kills beneficial bacteria, and promotes pathogens.”

Milk proteins like casein also make dairy very difficult to digest. While most candida sufferers can have butter without any problems, others can only tolerate ghee (clarified butter) which does not contain these proteins. For more information on butter see the Section on Fats and Oils above.

Commercially made yogurt and kefir is high in lactose content because they are made from low fat milk products, in addition to being made from pasteurized and/or homogenized milk. Even though some of the problems associated with processed dairy may be eliminated by using raw dairy it still doesn’t seem to help candida sufferers. Even when yogurt and kefir are homemade from raw dairy and fermented long enough to lower the lactose, it still causes problems for candida because lactose is changed into another sugar called galactose during the fermentation process, and it also contains casein.

It has been found that candida sufferers who hang on to their dairy products, other than butter, continue to have problems until they entirely eliminate them. Later on some candida sufferers may be able to tolerate small amounts of homemade yogurt and kefir, but they should still proceed with caution until they have cured their candida.

Antifungal, probiotic and coffee enemas
The benefits of a coffee, nystatin or probiotic enema cannot be overemphasized. Many people have experienced tremendous relief of their symptoms and renewed energy levels after taking enemas. The reasons for doing enemas are:

  1. Antifungal enemas to kill candida in the lower bowel because it is not easily reached by antifungals taken by mouth.
  2. Probiotic enemas plant good bacteria in the lower bowel.
  3. Coffee enemas will decongest and flush the liver and the adrenals.

Enemas can be done anytime during your treatment program, but they are highly advised early on when you are experiencing the most “die-off” symptoms. In fact coffee enemas and/or plain water enemas will lessen “die-off” symptoms. The healing crisis, “die-off” symptoms, handling symptoms & other tips

The Healing Crisis is an acute reaction that is the result of the activity of nature’s healing forces in overcoming chronic disease conditions. It is brought about when the body becomes overcrowded by wastes and toxins. Cells and tissues begin to throw off the waste and carry it from the bloodstream to various eliminating organs including the bowels, kidneys, lungs, skin, nasal passages, ears, throat, and genital organs. These organs, in turn, become congested and irritated, producing symptoms such as colds, boils, skin problems (rash, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, etc.), kidney and bladder infections, headaches, ear or eye infection, diarrhea and/or constipation, and fever, to name a few.

That is the healing crisis, which is a form of healing and elimination. First the toxins are removed and then the tissues are renewed. These symptoms and the process of elimination are part of the cure and should not be suppressed. Although a healing and disease crisis may look alike they are very different.

A disease crisis is when the body is loaded to the toleration point with wastes and toxins. The body arouses itself in self-defense and brings on an acute inflammation such as a cold, fever, etc. If the wastes and toxins are not eliminated the body adapts itself to function at a lower energy level. However these wastes and toxins accumulate and inhibit the organs from performing their normal functions until a chronic disease occurs.
On the other hand a healing crisis develops because the healing forces are strengthening. By changing the diet to a highly nutritious one, and by eliminating as many sources of damaging substances as possible, i.e. sugar, soy, grains, chemicals, mycotoxins, preservatives, molds, etc. the body gets stronger, digging into the tissues and eliminating old chronic waste and toxins.

Skin problems occur because of toxic elimination through the skin, but also because the body externalizes healing to the skin to protect vital inner organs.

The most important aspect of the healing crisis is to never go to extremes when making changes to your diet or life style. It is important to gradually introduce changes one at a time, allowing the body to adapt to the changes and adjust itself.

Trying to change too many things at once can be counter-productive, discouraging and postpone the goal of overall superior health. Make changes one step at a time. As you make positive changes to your diet or life style and as each one becomes well-integrated into your daily routine, they will replace old “bad” habits with new “good” habits resulting in a healthier happier existence with your body. Hering’s Law of Cures - These natural laws can be very comforting when it appears as if your symptoms are too severe or are lasting too long.

  1. Symptoms of a chronic disease disappear in definite order, going in reverse through every illness, symptom, disease, ache, pain or injury. This called “re-tracing.” During “re-tracing” you will not experience the “actual” disease, injury or illness. It will be a much milder form that is more like a “copy” of it.
  2. It takes about one month of natural healing for every year the symptoms have been present.
  3. Healing progresses from the more vital organs to the less vital organs; from inside of the body towards the skin and from the top of the body down.

Die-off symptoms and how to handle them
When you change your diet, particularly when you eliminate foods that feed candida, candida starts to die off. The reactions and symptoms you will experience as a result are called “die-off” symptoms. When the numbers of candida begin to depopulate you will feel the effects, which causes many symptoms and reactions.

Withdrawal Symptoms are some of the reactions you will experience. That is when your cravings for sugar, carbohydrates, alcohol, grain products, etc. will increase. At times it may make you feel as if you are starving, when you actually aren’t.

Cleansing Reactions - “Die-off” symptoms include cleansing reactions, which produces “flu-like” symptoms. This is because the body is trying to deal with the large numbers of toxins being released by the dead candida. This will results in excessive mucus being produced in the sinuses, nose, throat and lungs. These flu-like symptoms will also include and upset stomach, gas, bloating, belching, muscle and joint aches and pains, clumsiness, headaches, “brain fog,” etc. Often you may feel like you have been drugged, with symptoms similar to a bad hangover. This is because most candida toxins are alcohol, which would cause hangover-type symptoms.

“Die-off” symptoms are also called the Herxheimer reaction, which is caused by the rapid killing of candida and other harmful pathogens, with large quantities of yeast toxins, cell particles, and antigens being released into the bloodstream and the entire body.

Healing Reactions – In addition to withdrawal symptoms and cleansing reactions you will experience symptoms that are clearly healing reactions. The severity and/or number of healing reactions you experience depends upon how often your body has been exposed to toxins and/or traumatized during your lifetime with injuries, disease, or illnesses, and how much detoxifying and healing the body can accomplish at one time.

To help you “endure” this onslaught and continue with your program, keep in mind that any reactions means you are succeeding in ridding your body of toxic minerals, chemicals, bacteria, viruses, and parasites, and that “healing” is taking place. Every drugless healing practitioner is well aware of the healing reaction phenomenon.

The Cancer Clinics in Mexico explain to their patients that without a healing reaction within the first two weeks of the program they must be re-evaluated for what could be causing the delay. (This could be from ingesting things that counteract the program or from using personal care items such as lotions, cosmetics, hair care items, etc. that interfere with the program, or not taking the prescribed amount of coffee enemas.) When a patient experiences a healing reaction all of the staff rejoices with the patient.

Increased Symptoms - When high numbers of candida are being killed off, any symptoms experienced while candida was out of control may intensify. This is different person to person, depending upon areas of their body that were most affected by candida overgrowth. Women who have had vaginal yeast infection will find these symptoms will become more intense and they may change as well. If someone has experienced a lot of digestive problems, their digestive upsets and disturbances will increase. If someone had a lot of head-related symptoms, their symptoms will become worse. And so on.

Symptoms will get worse before they get better. Eventually your good days will increase and your bad days will decrease. Natural healing takes time, patience and persistence on your healing program.

Healing Reactions are Not Allergic Reactions
An allergy is defined as: “A condition in which the body has an exaggerated response to a substance introduced by inhalation, ingestion, injection, or skin contact, often manifested by itchy eyes, runny nose, wheezing, skin rash, hives, diarrhea, gas, bloating, headaches, aching muscles, joint pain, and many others. Please note that these reactions are exactly the same symptoms as healing reactions.

These reactions are created by the immune system, as a healing response, indicating that it is working very hard to eliminate and/or minimize the effects of toxic overloads on the body, or the ingestion of a poison. Candida overgrowth itself contributes over 79 different types of toxins, most of which are alcohol. Handling this overload is like trying to handle a hangover every single day of your life until you get rid of the candida overgrowth. There are many other toxic sources in our environment and foods as well, which add to the toxic overload on the body. Some substances aren’t merely toxic; they are poisonous, which causes direct debilitating damage.

It is widely published that allergies are caused by a depressed immune system. At the same time allergic responses and symptoms means the immune system is working extremely hard. When the immune system isn’t working up to par, it results in a total breakdown, so that bacteria, viruses or diseases, such as cancer, are allowed to take over. However, a healthy immune system is designed to destroy bacteria, viruses, cancer cells, etc.

Many people mistakenly assume they are allergic to many healthy foods, herbs, spices, etc. because of allergy tests or body reactions, which doctors also label as allergic. Please note that almost all allergy tests are inaccurate and they should not be relied upon to determine your allergies. Some allergies are obvious, because they are caused by toxic substances, i.e. room deodorizers, smoke, chemicals - in the air, body care products, cleaning products, etc.), smog, chemtrails, pesticides, etc. But allergies to animal dander, dust mites, dust, mold, pollen, etc. are less obvious. However, not everyone reacts negatively to these substances, which obviously points to a depressed immune system in those that do.

It is a fact that the body can, and will, react to good unadulterated foods with “allergic-like”symptoms, which is exactly the same way it reacts to toxins or poisons. However, reactions to good foods are not allergic reactions, they are healing reactions. When the body receives the nutrients it needs to heal, it goes into high gear, doing its job of healing, which creates healing symptoms. The long list of healing symptoms are exactly the same as the long list of allergic reactions, i.e. increased mucus in all mucus membranes (nose, sinuses, throat, lungs, intestines, stomach, etc.), headaches, stomach upset, gas, bloating, difficulty breathing, inflammation, heart palpitations, swelling, rashes, hives, diarrhea, constipation, fever, etc.

In fact hives are a healing reaction too. It is caused by the immune system releasing histamines and other chemicals into the bloodstream to handle toxins or to affect healing. Histamines causes hives, rashes, itching, swelling, and other related symptoms. Although hives may be uncomfortable, they are generally quite harmless and disappear on their own.

Therefore, do not be alarmed if you get healing reactions from good foods like eggs, coconut oil, butter, and other good healing foods. If you get reactions that are alarming or intolerable just cut back on the amount and gradually increase it.

Treatment for Severe Die-Off and Healing Symptoms, and Digestive problems
Try this mild treatment. While doing this treatment do not take any supplements, antifungals, or probiotics. Your die-off symptoms will be much less after this treatment.

Note: Every day of this treatment take two enemas each day of clear, room temperature warm purified water only. These help to physically remove a substantial amount of yeast present in the large colon.

Day One - Consume plenty of clear, salted meat and vegetable broth (salted with an ocean sea salt like Celtic). Do not eat any solid foods.

Day Two - Add solid pureed foods; they should be only protein, fats and low carbohydrate vegetables - cook and highly puree all foods in a blender to maximize absorption, thus minimizing the food residue in the intestines.

Day Three - Eight – Eat cooked pureed foods as described in Day Two above, and gradually add more and more solid foods each day over the next five days until you are completely back on a solid food diet.

Day Nine - Start adding any supplements, antifungals and probiotics you were taking prior to this treatment.

Die-off symptoms can also be alleviated by the following:

  • Vitamin C - take 4,000 mgs when the symptoms first start to appear, and take 1,000 mgs every hour until the symptoms subside or bowel tolerance is reached, i.e. loose stools or diarrhea. When you reach bowel tolerance take less vitamin C each hour until you reach bowel tolerance again, and so on. Vitamin C helps the body detoxify since it is a powerful antioxidant.
  • Ensure you are taking enough calcium/magnesium according to the Essential Supplements list above. It helps minimize aches and pains.
  • Take baths with Epsom salts, salt or 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide. Baths help draw toxins out through the skin which helps minimize symptoms. Add two cups, or 500 grams, of Epsom salts or one cup of salt to the bath (you can also mix Epsom salts and salts half and half). Soak for 15-20 minutes. Use 1/2 cup of 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide in 1/2 a bathtub of very warm water. Soak in the tub until you sweat.
  • Drink 4 cups of Pau D’arco tea per day. It is a powerful antioxidant and it will help your body detoxify.
  • Clove tea or clove oil. Cloves are an excellent powerful antioxidant which makes it a great detoxifier, and it also contains a natural antibiotic and it is antifungal. Only buy spices that are organic or certified organic at the health store because commercial spices are all irradiated.
  • Clove Tea: Boil 4-1/2 cups of water. Take it off the heat, Add two level teaspoons of ground cloves. Let it steep for 20 minutes. Strain well, and drink 4 1/2 cups hot or cold every day, or when needed. Whole cloves are more effective – put them in a heavy plastic bag and pulverize them with a hammer. Use 1 1/2 teaspoons in 4 1/2 cups of water.

Simple Things to Help You

  • For relaxation do this for 15 minutes every day. Lie on the floor with your feet on a chair so your thighs are at a right angle to the seat of the chair and the calves of your legs are lying across the seat of the chair. It is as simple as that.
  • Do dry skin brushing which will stimulate the liver and adrenal glands, increasing their ability to handle the toxins – see the Candida Group Dry Skin Brushing File.
  • Thump your thymus to stimulate it. Using your knuckles thump gently but firmly on your middle of your breastbone. Thump about 10 times in a row. Do this several times a day to wake up your thymus which is very important part of the immune system.

Cooking and Food Storage
When cooking and handling food it is important to handle, store and cook food correctly in order to retain healthy live-giving nutrients available in them.

Do not overcook any meats or vegetables, in order to retain their healthy nutrients and active enzymes, which are important for digestion. Cooking at low temperatures for a longer period of time is better than cooking at high temperatures that damage foods.

The best cooking oil is coconut oil - Of all the available oils, coconut oil is the best for cooking because it is nearly a completely saturated fat, which means it is much less susceptible to damage when it is heated, and it can withstand higher heat than others (up to 375 degrees fahrenheit). It can be mixed half and half with butter to increase the flavors in certain foods. Anytime you need an oil to cook with, coconut oil can automatically be used in place of butter, margarine, olive oil or any other type of oil in all recipes. Buy a good quality coconut oil for cooking as described in the Coconut Oil section above.

Do not microwave food, water or drinks - The most important rule in cooking is not to microwave any food, not even to heat leftovers, water or drinks. Recent research shows that microwaved food causes severe molecular damage in the body. When eaten it causes abnormal changes in human blood which can be viewed in a live blood cell analysis. These changes cause deterioration and damage to the immune system. In simple terms, microwave ovens change the molecular structure of food with radiation. If manufacturers would have more accurately called them “radiation chambers” it’s doubtful they would have ever sold one, but that’s exactly what a microwave oven IS.

Do not buy irradiated foods - When food is irradiated the radiation breaks up the molecular structure of the food and creates a whole new set of chemicals known as “unique radiolytic products” (URPs). These URPs include benzene, formaldehyde and a host of known mutagens and carcinogens. Irradiation kills vitamins, friendly bacteria and enzymes in food, and effectively renders the food “dead” and therefore useless to your body. Regulations vary from country to country, and even in the United States they can vary between states. Check regulations in your area to find out what foods have been approved for irradiation. As far as we know all spices in the United States and Canada are irradiated, and in the United States some fresh produce and meats are also irradiated.

The kinds of pots and pans to use - Cooking pots and pans must not be aluminum nor Teflon coated. Teflon releases a gas that is harmful when ingested in foods cooked in them.

Pots and pans made of cast iron are best. They need to be well-seasoned with coconut oil before use. There are also good pots and pans made of cast iron and coated with heavy enamel, which are very good too. High grade stainless steel pans are also good, as well as glass or stone.

Containers for storing foods - All containers for food should be made of glass, and not plastic, because plastic releases gases that leach into foods.

  4. Wow! I’ve apparently been suffering from Candiadiasis for many years and have only come to this conclusion over the past 4 years on my “health journey”. I’ve learned so much over the past year, but have not seen such a comprehensive article yet to-date. Thank you! I’m sure there are many who suffer and from this and just are not aware (as I was in that situation). I have now have a definite structure in mind of how I will tackle this!

    The only this I would have liked here was a link to your Recipe Folder that is mentioned when you discuss discarding the fermented cabbage solids or turning them into kimchi.

    I use it many ways.
    The simplest being add a little honey, cinnamon and cloves and seriously tastes just like blended apple
    pulp.

    Still your kimchi interests me so where is that page please.

  7. Kombucha WILL help get rid of Candida, when brewed for 14 days. The yeasts (Schizosaccharomycoses) in Kombucha are different to C.A. yeasts (they do not have spores-they’re not in the same family); they are antagonistic to the troublesome yeasts, & will COMPETE with the candida yeasts and gradually REPLACE them. The tea’s yeast will over-run bad yeasts, but need time to do so; so just need to take it slowly, as with all natural healing processes. So, don’t strain the yeasts out when bottling; they’re a friend not an enemy! Kombucha has both powerful detoxifying and immune-enhancing qualities, helping wherever there is something wrong in the body.

    I have two questions…i’ve read part 1 and 2 and maybe the answer is in part 3 which i’ll read tonight but i wanted to ask:

    1. How do I know I’m cured and able to re-introduce some things like potatoes, cream and cheese– oh by the way just a week ago I noticed patches on the side of my neck and earlier I’d noticed the same on my chest!! What is THAT??? I’m on the diet after all!!
    2. How long should I be on the diet before I start with anti-fungals and how long on those before I’m cured

    1. what is the best thing to apply to the penis if there is a mild candida/fungi rash there. I have used coconut oil with some success but was wondering if I should combine it with oregano or garlic (odor is a concern though)?

    2. I take a food based b complex by mega foods.It says that it’s derived from “S. cerevisiae, a non-candida yeast”, is this ok to keep taking? as I believe food based is better than synthesized (?)

    This is too mucho information to remember, I will like to have a consultation let me know how much, I’ve been suffering candidiasis for around 4 moths, Iam not really orient it, I have a nutritionist who knows I have this condition the problem is she gave me some supplements and they gave me allergic reaction, right now Iam limit it in eating food, Iam practically allergic to almost everything, shellfish, tree nuts, olives, soy, all fruits right now the only veggies I eat are brocoli, green beans sukinnies if I tried something new it will cause itching on my troat, I feel like my candidiasis is in my troat and ensofugus, the doctor found a lot of sores in my entire troat, Is there’s clinic or place that I can have group chat and get information Iam new at this so it’s hard for me to recover I’ve been to a total of 9 doctors and none of them have solve my problem and the only one who foun out what I have is my nutrionist, right now my body rejects, anything that contains herbs, fruits so I don’t know what eat or what to take to control my candidiasis, PLEASE HELP ME.

    Even though I think non-stick pans are a great idea, I cannot understand why scientists cannot create a non-stick surface that is safe to use. Even though cast iron pans may be an alternative, I think non-stick pans should still be available in some form as long as there are no dangers from using them !
